Agricultural technology strawberries "Polka"

I would like to know a little what kind of strawberry Polka is: a description of the variety, recommendations for growing berries. I heard a lot of good reviews about her taste, but I hesitate to buy planting material, as sometimes there were failures with foreign varieties. Is this really unpretentious and fruitful strawberry? Is it suitable for cultivation on sandy soil? Thank you in advance for your response.

For Strawberry Polka, the variety description usually emphasizes the elegant shape of its berries: large, weighing up to 70 g, they have a heart shape (Fig. 1). The color of the fruit is from dark red to burgundy, with red flesh. The average yield is about 2 kg per bush per season.

By the time of fruiting in Russia, it is customary to classify Polka as a medium-ripening variety. It means that Berry picking time begins in the third decade of June and ends until mid-July. The berries are dense pulp and can tolerate storage and transportation for 2-3 days without noticeable damage.

The evenness of the fruits and the excellent caramel-sweet taste make this variety very convenient for making jam, freezing, and drying. Relative to dessert varieties Polka will not leave indifferent lovers of fresh berries. Reviews of gardeners indicate that fragrant and sweet fruits will appeal to both adults and children.

Agricultural technology varieties Polka

Garden strawberries of the Polka variety belong to unpretentious and heat-resistant varieties. Amateur gardeners who can’t often visit areas for watering plantings can only be afraid of a slight decrease in yield due to a decrease in the weight of the berry. At the same time, the sugar content in them increases, because of which the taste becomes more saturated.

Polka is undemanding to soil. Its only preference is the absence of moisture stagnation; it is best managed in high places with light soils (sandy loam, loam). The frequency of watering during the development and ripening of fruits is 1-2 times a week in the absence of rainfall. Top dressing before blooming with complex fertilizer according to the instructions, a repeated procedure should be carried out in late summer or early fall, before frost. At the time of fruit setting, it is advisable to treat the plantation with antifungal agents to protect against gray rot and powdery mildew. This will be especially true in rainy cold years.

How to plant strawberries

After fruiting, Polka forms a small number of short whiskers, which greatly facilitates the care of it. Rooted sockets can be used as planting material. It is better to land them in the period from August to October. It is better to cover young plantings for the winter with non-woven material or straw to prevent freezing.
