Numerous synthetic preparations help gardeners and gardeners to effectively protect green plantings and beds from dangerous diseases and harmful insects. Thanks to a special substance - piperonyl butoxide, manufacturers enhance the effect of the main components. The main advantage is that even with short-term exposure to drugs containing PPB, the working effect lasts for a long period.

Physicochemical properties

Piperonyl butoxide belongs to synergistic substances that increase the toxicity of other elements, while remaining non-toxic. Piperonyl butoxide has the following characteristics:

  • oily liquid, the hue can vary from yellow to brown;
  • does not dissolve in water;
  • boiling point - 180 ° C.

Substance decomposes rapidly in light. Organic solvents can be used to prepare solutions.

Action on insects

As a synergist, piperonyl butoxide is used in the production of pyrethroids (synthetic insecticides used to kill harmful insects).

The principle of action of insecticides - neurotoxic poisons cause paralysis and death of insects, disrupting the transmission of nerve impulses, blocking protective enzymes.

The addition of PPB (in a ratio of 1:10, 1: 5) leads to a 2-4 times increase in the rate of paralysis in cockroaches. Thanks to the synergist, the active poison quickly penetrates the cuticle of arthropod pests. You also need to take into account other ways of penetration of the substance: by inhalation in the case of using aerosols, by ingestion.

Instructions for use

Piperonyl butoxide complements the composition of more than 1,500 household and agricultural products.

Most often, the substance as a synergist is added to insecticide preparations produced on the basis of preparative forms of pyrethroids (the composition includes the active and auxiliary substances).

It is noteworthy that PPB can have a negative effect on compounds. The antagonistic effect is manifested when added to the following drugs: Diazinon, Fipronil, Imidacloprid, Chlorpyrifos.

Toxicity and Precautions

The substance is classified as moderately hazardous. To prevent possible poisoning, use the following precautions:

  • storage rooms are equipped with ventilation;
  • when spraying, use protective gloves, eye protection;
  • in the process of work, do not smoke, take drinks or food.

PPB is considered to be of low toxicity and, with a single contact with the skin, does not cause significant harm. But it is recommended to wash the skin area with running water. If swallowed, it can provoke vomiting, diarrhea.

As a first aid, it is recommended to rinse your mouth, drink a couple of glasses of clean water. There is no irritating effect on the mucous membrane when it gets into the eyes. But it is advisable to immediately wash your face with clean water, rinsing your eyes well. Also, when using drugs, it is necessary to take into account the combustible quality of PPB; to extinguish a fire, use carbon dioxide, foam or powder.

To obtain a large harvest, you need to provide decent care for crops. Numerous drugs help to fight not only plant diseases, but also harmful insects. When using the funds, you must first carefully study the composition and familiarize yourself with the instructions for use.
