The apple tree, of course, is the favorite and main culture in Russian gardens, due to its environmental plasticity and a huge variety of varieties. The taste of the fruit, the content of vitamins, aroma, color, storage options and processing methods are very diverse and make the choice of varieties practically inexhaustible.
The Orlik apple tree was bred on the territory of the Oryol zonal fruit and berry experimental station. The variety was obtained in 1959 and was the result of work on crossing the Macintosh and Bessemyanka Michurinskaya apple trees. The authorship belongs to domestic breeders E. N. Sedov and T. A. Trofimova. About a decade was spent on improving the Orlik apple tree. It was possible to achieve a significant increase in indicators of frost resistance and fruiting varieties. In 1968, seedlings were allocated to the elite class, and two years later, the Orlik apple tree was admitted to the State tests.
Thirty years ago, the Orlik apple tree was zoned for cultivation in the Central, Central Black Earth, and Northwest regions. This variety quickly gained popularity and became popular not only in private farms, but also in commercial gardens. The reason for this popularity was the compact size of the tree, as well as a high yield.
The Orlik apple tree is quick-growing and forms extremely nutritious fruits with excellent taste. The most noticeable disadvantages of the variety are represented by a fairly high percentage of shedding apples at the pre-harvest stage, as well as the frequency of fruiting.
Apple tree: growing and care
The Orlik apple tree has gained extreme popularity and wide distribution in the territory of our country and is cultivated almost everywhere.
Description of fruits, their nutritional value and chemical composition
The fruits of the Orlik apple tree are of medium size, slightly pronounced conical shape. The oily skin is covered with a characteristic waxy coating. The fruits at the harvest stage have a greenish yellow color. At the stage of consumption, the color changes to light yellow. The merging type of stripes and the blurring of a thick blush characterize the integumentary staining of the apple. Fruits are fixed by short and thick stalks. The anchorage is characterized by a pronounced influx.
The pulp of the fruit has a dense and juicy, cream-colored structure. A feature of sweet and sour taste is harmony, estimated at 4.4-4.6 points. The parameters of the chemical composition of the fruits are as follows:
- indicators of total sugar do not exceed 11%;
- the total volume of titratable acids slightly exceeds 0.3%;
- the content of ascorbic acid can reach 9 mg per 100 grams of apples;
- the total amount of P-active substances reaches 170 milligrams in 100 grams of apple pulp.
Excellent dessert qualities, excellent transportability and excellent taste made Orlik apples demanded for the manufacture of baby food and fortified juices.
Adults who have already formed apple trees of this variety have a small height and a very compact crown. It has a rounded shape and average foliage. The main branches extend from the stem of the apple tree at a right angle. Branch growth is upward. The smooth and slightly yellowish bark of the tree is quite dense.
The peculiarity of the flowers of this type of tree is staining in very saturated bright pink shades at the stage of budding. At the flowering stage, the color of the petals changes to white with a slight pinkish tint.
The leaves of the apple tree are quite large, dense, dark green in color with a slight gray tint. The leaves are characterized by roughness and ribbing, some curvature towards the vein. The tips of the leaves are sharp, the petiole is thick and short. The kidneys have a conical shape and medium size.
The period of mass harvesting of ripened fruits at the stage of technical ripeness in the middle lane begins not earlier than the middle of the first autumn month. A feature of Orlik apples is the ability to use them fresh or as raw materials for processing immediately after harvest. The variety is characterized by the shelf life of the fruit, and if you have a cool basement, you can extend the use of fresh apples almost until spring.
Young plants enter the fruiting phase very early and quickly increase productivity. Fruit trees at the age of 20 years are able to show a yield significantly exceeding 100 kilograms of fruit from each plant. Frequency in fruiting, as well as partial shedding of apples, can be observed, which should be considered when choosing the time of harvesting. Orlik apple trees are characterized by stable winter hardiness, and early maturity and the rate of increase in yield is higher than that of the popular variety "Saffron Pepin".
Landing and care
Due to the compactness of fruit trees of this variety, apple trees can be planted with a distance of about two meters between them. Such a gap is quite sufficient to provide the apple tree root system with an optimal nutritional area and to make plant care problem-free.
Landing can be carried out both in the spring and in the fall. Planting pits must be prepared in at least three weeks, which will allow the soil to sag and free of excess moisture. It is very important to take into account the depth of the groundwater and, if necessary, to carry out high-quality drainage of the planting site of seedlings. The planting pit should be filled by a third with humus, peat and wood ash.
To ensure proper growth of the young plant, all the seedlings must be carefully tied to the wooden pegs installed in the landing pit with a soft cloth. The soil should be fertile and not too acidic. After planting, it is necessary to water the seedlings. Despite the winter hardiness of apple trees, it is recommended to wrap trunks during cultivation in the northern regions.
Further care consists in observing the general rules for the cultivation of fruit trees, including loosening and mulching of trunks, removal of excess moisture from the root system, as well as watering and top dressing.

Reviews of summer residents
Amateur gardeners and summer residents speak well of the Orlik apple tree, which is due not only to the unpretentious nature of the plant under growing conditions, but also to a consistently high yield, as well as high taste indices of ripe apples, their excellent transportability and keeping quality. The variety is in demand not only for private use, but also for commercial purposes. However, when comparing the taste and aroma of Orlik apples with other varieties, many gardeners prefer varieties with more brightly colored, large and aromatic fruits, including Lobo.
